Isla Mujeres

With a gorgeously secluded and isolated setting in its own piece of island paradise, just 13 kilometres away from Cancun mainland, Isla Mujeres is a tiny little isle spanning along seven kilometres and connected to Cancun via ferry boats. Easily accessible from the Cancun Hotel Zone (a short 15-minute boat ride), Isla Mujeres (or Island of Women, as its names translates in English) is a place of leisure and play, with plenty of attractions to keep everyone well and truly entertained. A former fishing village, recently discovered by tourists, the island still retains some of its sleepy charm and soothing atmosphere. Strolling around the island's downtown area you will be able to contemplate the authentic Mexican Caribbean way of life as you spot families gathering together in the evenings to mend their fishing nets at the doorstep of their colourful and picturesque homes, quaintly tucked between restaurants and shops.

In terms of entertainment Isla Mujeres has plenty to offer holidaymakers during the day, with lively shops, numerous places to savour fresh seafood beautifully cooked using traditional recipes, some of which feature Caribbean, Mediterranean, Cuban and Mayan influences. Hidalgo Street, located in the island's downtown area is the main dining and entertainment hotspot while Playa Norte, after an amazing recovery from Hurricane Wilma in 2005 is now back to pristine condition and offering several facilities.
