What is there to see and do?

Jordan is home to a wealth of historical and natural attractions that are amazing to discover. The most famous is the UNESCO World Heritage Site Petra, a rock-hewn city in the middle of the desert. Some astounding buildings and tombs remain, with the Treasury being its most famous monument. Another historical landmark worth visiting is Jerash, one of the best preserved Roman cities in the world. There are amazing colonnaded streets, stunning theatres and a huge plaza, among other monuments. Away from its impressive history are some outstanding natural sites. One of the best known is Wadi Rum, an awesome valley in the heart of the desert. There are amazing rock formations here that have been carved out by the power of the wind and sand. It's linked to the story of TE Lawrence, while ancient rock carvings have also been found here. The Dead Sea is another of Jordan's top attractions, with this body of water having the distinction of being the saltiest in the world. 

When is the best time to go?

The best times of year to visit Jordan are typically during the spring months (March to May) or in autumn (September to November) as the weather is pleasantly warm and sunny without being oppressively hot. Winter, particularly in and around the capital Amman, can be surprisingly cold, with snow not uncommon. Summers, especially on the Gulf of Aqaba and in the Jordan Valley, can be very humid, making the heat unbearable at times.

Do you need a visa?

British and EU citizens don't need to apply for a visa ahead of travel as they will be issued with a visa on arrival at the Jordanian border and these are valid for stays of up to one month. The cost of the visa for all nationalities is 20 JOD (approximately £17). If you wish to have a multi-entry visa, you need to apply to the relevant embassy or consulate before your trip.

How can I get there?

There are regular direct flights from the UK to Jordan, with British Airways, Royal Jordanian and easyJet all running services between the two countries. A direct flight to the capital, Amman usually takes around five hours from London.

What is the local currency and what currency should I take?

The local currency is the Jordanian dinar and most major currencies can be exchanged at banks in the country. Although there are local money changers, you're advised to avoid using them. International credit cards are widely accepted throughout Jordan and ATMs are readily available although a withdrawal charge may apply. Likewise, the use of credit cards may be refused at some facilities (which accept cash only) and their use may incur an extra charge at others. As a precautionary measure it's always best to carry some cash around when visiting attractions.

Do I need travel insurance to travel to Jordan?

It's advisable to have comprehensive travel insurance before making any overseas trip and the same applies if you're visiting Jordan. It isn't mandatory to take out a policy, but it is certainly recommended.

How is internet access and mobile coverage in Jordan?

There is good mobile phone coverage in Jordan, although internet is not quite so readily available. You will have good access to the internet in the major cities and towns - most hotels have the internet and there are numerous internet cafes.

How orthodox is Jordan's dress code for women?

Although there is no strict dress code for western women, it is strongly advised that you dress conservatively when you're in the country out of respect. Long skirts or trousers, and tops that cover the shoulders, are the best options. Avoid wearing anything that's particularly low-cut or revealing. It is, however, fine to wear a bikini around your hotel pool - just make sure you cover up when you leave the poolside.
