Enjoy the buzz of Nassau

While it's great to spend time on the beautiful beaches, it's also worth setting aside a day or two to discover Nassau during your holiday in the Bahamas. This bustling city is situated on the island of New Providence and has a fascinating history.

In fact, until the mid-18th century, Nassau was predominantly inhabited by pirates and it was only when the first Royal Governor of the territory expelled them and constructed Fort Nassau that the city became more respectable.

As you can imagine, there are several sites relating to this chequered past that you can explore, such as the Pirates of Nassau Museum and Blackbeard's Tower. There is also a selection of other historical sites, such as Fort Charlotte, the Pompey Museum and Government House.

There are plenty of great activities on offer in Nassau too, such as golf, tennis, scuba diving and sailing, while there's also a wide variety of shops that sell everything from luxury products to locally crafted souvenirs - perfect if you want to splash some cash.

Travelling in the Bahamas

If you want to travel around while you're in the Bahamas, you'll need to do a bit of preparation. You can hire a car when you arrive and this is ideal if you're planning to stay on Paradise Island but want to be able to pop to Nassau whenever you please.

Travelling between the other islands can be arranged, but be aware that most of the water taxis offer services to and from Nassau and don't necessarily run between neighbouring islands.
